Laser Varicose Vein Treatment

Are you afraid to show your legs in public or just tired of the pain and discomfort associated with varicose veins? Our vein specialists are world renowned experts in using the latest technologies in treating varicose veins.

Varicose veins are a very common condition and affect approximately 15 percent of men and 25 percent of women. These veins usually occur in the lower extremities because standing and walking increases the pressure in the veins in the lower half of your body. Heredity, pregnancy, long standing occupations and trauma are some of the more common causes of varicose veins. For many people, varicose veins are not only unattractive but can cause aching, pain, swelling, cramping, itching, skin ulcerations and tenderness. Some conservative treatments are available such as elevation of lower extremities, compression hose, exercise, weight loss and avoiding standing or sitting for long periods.

If conservative treatment is not successful Endovenous Laser Therapy (EVLT) may be an option. EVLT is a treatment alternative to surgical stripping of the greater saphenous vein. A small laser fiber is inserted, through a needle stick in the skin, into the damaged vein. Pulses of laser light are delivered inside the vein, which causes the vein to collapse and seal shut. The procedure is done in-office under local anesthesia. Following the procedure a bandage or compression hose is placed on the treated leg. Not all patients with varicose veins are candidates for EVLT. Proper diagnosis and consultation with a vascular surgeon or interventional radiologist are essential in successful treatment of venous conditions.

This procedure is frequently done in combination with additional vein treatments such as Ultrasound-Guided Sclerotherapy or Microambulatory Phlebectomies (MAPs). Most insurance companies will pay for these procedures if the patient is symptomatic. For the insurance company to pay for the procedure you must first be seen by a provider for a free vein screening. An ultrasound will be ordered if in the screening process it is determined that patient’s problem is venous in nature. If the ultrasound shows venous insufficiency, you will be scheduled for a history and physical with a physician who will recommend a treatment plan. The downtime for all of the vein treatments is minimal and the results are optimal. Patients are very surprised at how easy the procedures and recovery period are.
