Are spider veins keeping you from wearing shorts this summer? Be free from unsightly spider veins with a simple in-office procedure where veins are injected with a solution causing them to collapse and fade from view. The procedure takes approximately thirty minutes and there is no downtime.
Spider veins are like varicose veins but smaller. They are small red, blue or purple veins that appear on the surface of the legs, ankles and feet. They can be caused by heredity, pregnancy, hormones, obesity, trauma and prolonged sitting or standing occupations.
Spider veins may be isolated or associated with varicose veins. At a free vein screening, the provider will determine if a diagnostic ultrasound of the lower extremities is needed to determine if there are feeder veins or underlying varicose veins causing spider veins.
The most common and effective form of treatment is sclerotherapy. Sclerotherapy is the injection of the veins, using a tiny needle, with a chemical (sclerosant) which is an irritant to the vein, causing it to collapse and fade away. One to four treatments are needed. These appointments are scheduled a month apart depending on the severity of the spider veins. Compression hose will need to be worn for one week after treatment to ensure the best outcome.
